I recently watched the movie, “Zombieland” directed by Ruben Fleischer. This movie came out in 2009 and stars Woody Harrelson, Jesse Eisenberg, Abigail Breslin, Emma Stone, and other recognizable faces. The movie takes place during a zombie apocalypse. It opens with scenes of what was going on, when the apocalypse first happened. We then meet one of the main characters, Columbus. He explains to the viewer how he has survived so far and his techniques on how to continue surviving. He proceeds to meet the other main characters, Tallahassee, Little Rock, and Wichita. You may realize at this point that the characters names are the same names of cities in the U.S., this is because they didn’t want to get to know each other that well in case something were to happen to them. So, they developed these names from the places that they are trying to get to. The characters end up sticking together and trying to make the best of the situation, until Little Rock and Wichita split up from the group to go to an amusement park that they heard was zombie free. Then something bad happens.
I have watched this movie multiple times, but recently watched it last weekend at my house. This movie fits into the horror and comedy genres. The plot is straightforward because it is a movie about people trying to survive a zombie apocalypse and sticking together to build connections. You end up caring about the characters because you kind of build a bond with them through the screen. You see all their emotions and sides of themselves. When they’re sad, happy, frustrated, building connections with each other, betraying each other, all of it. There is a sequel, “Zombie: Double Tap.” The acting is good, not the greatest though because it is a little cringey at times. The events were not believable due to it being about a zombie apocalypse, but the director did do a good job at making it seem like it would be believable if it was true. As it was fiction, inaccurate information is to be expected.
There were not any quotes that struck me, but moments of the characters bonding did because it shows that even if the world is ending, the people you have close to you matter the most. The special effects were engaging because they created action. There are triggering warnings advised due to profanity, graphic content, and nudity. Other movies and shows that would be similar are things that would be about zombie apocalypses and the world ending.
While watching this I learned to keep the people you have connections with close because they will be there for you no matter what. I would recommend this movie to people who are slightly older, it’s not meant for children. I would give “Zombieland” a eight out of ten rating.
