Sometimes a loss on the scoreboard can be a win in disguise. A prime example was the Monday, Feb. 3, loss by the Lady Devils to top-ranked (Class AA) North Marion by a 67-59 margin. The game was actually closer than the final eight-point margin. Even though the home team came up on the short end on the scoreboard, they played their best game of the season displaying hustle and intensity that had been missing in recent games.

The Lady Huskies entered the game 15-1 record with their only loss being a 56-55 setback to the NO. 6 ranked team in (Class AAA),Martinsburg, a team perennial powerhouse in the eastern panhandle and frequent state tournament contender.

In Monday’s contest the score was tied 56-56 with 4:31 left on the game clock after Mackenzie Smith scored an inside basket. North Marion pushed the lead back to four points, 60-56, after baskets by Taylor Buonamici, who was the games leading scorer with 23 points, and Kylie Denham.

St. Marys only went to the foul line nine times and made six. The Huskies Katlyn Carson scored an uncontested lay-up in the final 10 seconds to account for the final eighth point, 67-59.
