Lady Devils slay the Cameron Lady Dragons

St. Marys was locked in from the free-throw line Saturday evening and the effort lifted the Lady Devils to 54-48 victory over Cameron, in the championship portion of the SMHS Boys and Girls Invitational. The Lady Devils never trailed in the contest and held off a determined second half rally by Cameron, by connecting time after time from the foul line.

For the game, St. Marys shot a blistering 76% from the charity stripe, making 28 of it’s 37 attempts. Junior Kylie Wright (8 for 8) and Sophomore Josey Moore (7 for 7) were flawless in their trips to the foul line. Freshman Zoe Davis made four of her five attempts and junior Lara Fetty canned seven of her eleven tries. The victory improved the 10th ranked (Class A) Lady Devils to 8-2 on the season. They travel to Williamstown for an important Little Kanawha Conference West Division contest Tuesday and will travel to Cameron Thursday to begin the defense of their West Virginia Hometown Invitational Tournament championship.

The SMHS Invite title was the seventh for the Lady Devils, who appeared in the championship game for the 15th season. Cameron, which had defeated St. Marys in the last two girls championship games, fell to 7-4.

Wright got the Lady Devils off to a good start scoring six first quarter points as the hosts built a nine-point lead with just under a minute left in the opening stanza. Cameron’s Kori Scott, who scored 24 points to lead all scorers, drained a three with two ticks on the clock to put the score 19-13 Lady Devil lead going into the second quarter. The Lady Devils seemed to be in control and slowly built their lead.
