St. Marys Captures Blue Devils Alumni Tournament

St. Marys High School’s wrestling team put on quite a show inside its own gymnasium Saturday, Jan. 11. The Blue Devils had six wrestlers place in the top three in their respective weight classes as they outlasted 14 other teams to claim the top prize in the sixth annual Blue Devils Alumni Tournament. St. Marys sent three wrestlers to the championship finals and had three other grapplers in the consolation finals. Five of those six athletes won their final match. The Blue Devils need every one of those victories as they defeated runner-up Parkersburg South by 4.5 points to capture the team title.

St. Marys finished with 136 points on the day. Parkersburg South won a close battle for second place with 131.5 points. Doddridge County was third with 127.5 points and Huntington was fourth with 122 points.

Wiley Houser and Brennan Boron provided the main highlights for the Blue Devils. They both reached the championship finals and closed out the tournament with individual championships. Houser pinned his way into the 145-pound title He capped off his dominating effort with a 16-0 technical fall over Roane County’s Ryan Conley. Boron was equally impressive in the 160-pound division. He won by technical fall over Huntington’s Hunter James to reach the championship finals where he easily disposed of Ravenswood’s Clay Tanner winning by a 10-2 major decision.

Cody Houser also made it to the championship finals for St. Marys. He pinned Elkin’s Zachary Barrickman in the semifinals before falling to Huntington’s Eli Byrd to setting for a runner-up showing. All three Blue Devil wrestlers that reached the consolation finals finished off the tournament with victories to finish in third place in their respective weight classes.

The wrestling team as a whole worked together to earn this title. Wish them luck as they are headed to Ravenswood this Saturday, Jan. 18.
