St. Marys made huge plays on offense, defense, and special teams to secure a 40-20 win over Gilmer County at Morris Stadium in Glenville on Friday, October 10. The win improved the Blue Devils to 4-2 on the season while continuing a steady march to return to the state playoffs. St. Marys controlled the game from the start as they scored 35 straight points to start the game and effectively put the game out of reach.
The Blue Devils captured the first score of the game on their first possession with senior running back Eli Wilson capped the drive with a six-yard touchdown run. Angelus Palata improved the score to 7-0 with an extra point kick as he went 6-6 on extra point attempts. The Blue Devils capitalized just seconds later with a turnover, then Jeremiah DeMoss completed a pass to Kaige Winland for a 30-yard touchdown. The early scoring streak continued with a 77-yard punt return by Eli Cox advancing the score to 21-0. Jeremiah DeMoss also had a 4-yard touchdown run, and Ethan Pierce had a 37-yard touchdown run.
Gilmer County scored at the end of the second quarter and had a score of 35-8 at halftime. The hard work the Blue Devils put in defense, and special teams helped the team to only use 46 plays all night. The team did the majority of their work on the grounds with 186 yards on 39 attempts. Eli Wilson led the rushing attack with 67 yards, Jeremiah DeMoss with 35, and Ethan Pierce with 42. Kaige Winland led the team in tackles with 6, while Jeremiah DeMoss and Noah Dawson also had quarterback sacks. The Blue Devils were victorious and will help improve their post-season opportunities.
