After a year’s resting, St. Marys girls’ basketball is going back to the Class AA State Girls’ Basketball Tournament. The lady devils paved their way to the tournament in Charleston in a 43-35 victory over Williamstown last Wednesday. The win came from a Class AA region one co-final home game. St. Marys and Williamstown entered the contest ranked number 2 and number 3 in the state respectively. St. Marys returns to the tournament for the third time in the last four years and 14th time in school history. The girls’ basketball team have won three state championships, with the last one being 35 years ago.
St. Marys will go up against another rival Ritchie County in the Class AA quarterfinals at 1 p.m. Tuesday in the Charleston Coliseum and Convention Center. The winner will advance to meet the winner of the Charleston Catholic and Logan in the semifinals at 11:15 a.m. on Thursday. The other half of the competition is number 1 Wheeling Central, number 4 Wyoming East, number 5 James Monroe and number 8 Philip Barbour. The Class AA state championship game will be played at 10 a.m. Saturday.
Addie Davis, four-time first team all-state performer, scored 13 points, made five rebounds and assisted four times. Callie Powell played her key defense while Linsie Asher played key role and scored two points while making key plays on both sides of the court.
