St. Marys Girls Basketball: A Championship to Remember For the first time since 2014, the St. Marys High School girls’ basketball team stood atop the Little Kanawha Conference. With determination and grit, the Lady Devils held off Gilmer County in a thrilling championship matchup, securing a hard-fought 37-34 victory.
The game was a defensive battle from start to finish. St. Marys relied on key plays from Callie Powell, who sparked the offense with early buckets, and Addie Davis, whose aggressive drives kept the pressure on Gilmer County’s defense. Freshman Laney Watkins proved crucial as well, showcasing her talent on both ends of the court.
In a game defined by defensive intensity, Bryalynn Bullock’s 12-point performance helped tilt the momentum in St. Marys’ favor. She scored six critical points in the third quarter, leading her team to a narrow but decisive edge.
The Lady Devils’ defense was relentless. Allie Ellyson and Anna Bennett battled for rebounds and loose balls, making sure Gilmer County couldn’t find a rhythm. Every possession mattered, and in the final moments, St. Marys held their ground.
As the final buzzer sounded, the gym erupted in cheers. St. Marys had done it—their first LKC title in nearly a decade. For Coach Fred King and his players, the championship wasn’t just a victory; it was proof that hard work, resilience, and teamwork could bring history back to life.

My name is Christian. I’m from Austria. I’m 16 years old. Right now, I’m doing an exchange year in the beautiful State West Virginia in St. Marys (St Marys High School.) In the beginning I was nervous but with the time I got more confidence. Besides that, I am in the football team and can proudly say that I’m the kicker. It is an incredible feeling to help the team however I can, whether with field goals or extra points.
