The Blue Devil cross country team coached by Steven Nutter had one of the most difficult schedules of any class A team in the state. The boys’ division had 10 complete teams that qualified from the four regions in the state. Region one consisted of St. Marys, Magnolia and Tyler Consolidated. There was a total of 21 teams and 84 runners in the race. Charleston Catholic was predicted to win the boys state title, but the LKC had several teams capable of challenging them. This includes the Blue Devils, Doddridge County and Tyler County. Other LKC teams that were there included Ravenswood, Ritchie County, Webster County and Wirt County. When the class A race was finished, three teams out of the LKC were in the top five. St. Marys scored 61 points to pass Charleston Catholic, leaving Charleston at second. Doddridge County finished third with 100 points. Blue Devil senior Jay Mote finished five places ahead of Charleston Catholic senior Ewan Becher. This gave SMHS the state championship title.
