St. Marys, WV – The St. Marys Lady Devils came up just short in their bid for a sectional title, falling to Magnolia 3-1 in the Class A, Region 1 Sectional Final on Wednesday. Magnolia took the first two sets 27-25 and 25-17, before St. Marys fought back with a 25-21 win in the third set. However, Magnolia clinched the match with a 25-21 victory in the fourth set.
Despite the loss, several Lady Devils had standout performances. Junior Alyssa Winland had a team-high 20 points, three aces, and 25 digs, keeping St. Marys competitive throughout the match. Senior Callie Powell was dominant at the net with 17 kills from 65 attacks, while freshman Rylee Renner recorded a team-best 22 sets. Madison Sturgeon added seven points and 16 digs, while Laura Hacker contributed eight points and three aces.
The Lady Devils’ regional run came after an appeal that led to the reclassification of Tyler Consolidated, which had initially been placed in the wrong division. St. Marys now advances to face Trinity Christian in the regional co-final, with the winner earning a spot in the state tournament. Despite the defeat, the Lady Devils’ resilience has made this season one to remember.
