On Thursday, September 19, the Blue Devil golf team participated in a LKC preview match hosted by the Wirt County Tigers at Mingo Bottom Golf Course. The St. Marys Blue Devils have been the 2024 season favorite. This team has faced strong challenges from other competitors, such as, the Wahama White Falcons, the Williamstown Yellow Jackets, and the Roane County Raiders. At Thursday’s match, those teams pushed the Blue Devils, however they took advantage and had a five-stroke advantage over the White Falcons, a six-stroke lead over the Jackets, and a ten-stroke dominance over the Raiders.
During the regular golf season and the LKC championship match, teams can play five players with their five best scores that count in the team’s total. These teams have become the LKC’s top four teams, and all have three exceptional golfers. Therefore, the winning team is usually decided on how the team’s fourth golfer performs.
At the LKC preview match, St. Marys held a lead over Williamstown by two strokes, Wahama by five strokes, and Roane County by seven strokes, after each team’s top three golfers were finished. Kenzie Armstrong, fourth golfer, shot 41, while other golfers shot higher than her. The fourth-place players’ scores gave the Blue Devils the championship trophy to bring home. Preston Lawhon earned co-medalist honors with three-under par rounds of 33. Trent Renner also finished under par, shooting one under par 35. Tripp Morrison scored +4, 39. Kenzie Armstrong shot +6, 41 and Brady Rinard scored +8, 43. The St. Marys team score was 148. Top 10 individual finishers include Preston Lawhon, Trent Renner, and Tripp Morrison.
