An Adventure in Costa Rica with Jaden Hatcher
The St. Marys United Methodist Church went on a mission trip to Costa Rica. The Costa Rica Mission Projects, manger Will Bailey, provides a safe place for youth to go and explore in Costa Rica while learning to help others in need. The trip lasted from June 28 to July 6.The trip consisted of all different types of jobs. The jobs ranged from painting metal frames to pouring concrete for rooms in a church. During this trip, students learn about a new culture other than their own.
When Judy Nutter, the trip manger, was asked why she had started the mission trips she replied I’ve gone on a lot of mission trips myself that were life changing and that if the youth could go it would be life changing for them too. The focus of the trip is on the youth. Judy also stated that the youth cant just decide to go on a mission, so they need a door opened for them. Judy is a retired teacher who substitutes at St. Marys High School from time to time. Judy says I have always had a soft spot for the youth and she continues to connect with them through this trip.
The mission projects are supported by the United Methodist Churches who participate along with other sponsors. The students involved will fundraiser for their expenses by selling cookies for Valentine’s Day and Christmas. A car wash is held at Advanced Auto in St. Marys each year. The St. Marys United Methodist Church also offers a scholarship for first time members. The mission trip is an annual event for the church, that all involved look forward to. It is a time of year for the St. Marys United Methodist Church to give back to a greater cause outside of the community.
