An arising argument throughout the world is on whether the school day should be longer or not. I feel like the school day is the perfect amount of time and I don’t feel as if making it longer would have any benefits. If school days were longer, what else could teachers teach? Many teachers have given their students free time during class because there isn’t anything left to teach for that day. Is it wise to waste time and money to lengthen the school day? How much information can students learn in one day? After a certain point, a student stops listening and starts “zoning out”.
After school, students are often assigned piles of homework given to them by their teachers. This usually takes a good amount of their evening. By the time they’re done with everything school-related, it’s usually quite late in the night, and they go to sleep maybe stressed and tired, and they wake up the next morning, often sleep deprived.
The school needs to realize that students have lives separate from school. We have family things, friends that we hang out with, and extra-curricular activities that we participate in. By lengthening the school day, students are being stripped away from their social life that helps them grow as a person outside from the building known as “school”.
You are taking away the experiences that a student has outside of school that usually leads them to make smarter decisions in life. Students don’t just learn at school. Some of their best learned lessons are learnt outside of school. People need to realize and acknowledge that. For many, lengthening the school day brings very few benefits and many problems.
