The latest thing I have watched is Shrek the Musical for my college theater class. Shrek the Musical was first performed on September 10, 2008. The playwright is David Lindsay-Abaire and it was composed by Jeanine Tesori. It is an adaption of Shrek and Shrek!, a fantasy comedy picture book written in 1990. It is made up of multiple musical styles from ballads to R&B to dance Broadway numbers with some pop/rock elements.
The main characters include Shrek, Princess Fiona, Donkey, Lord Farquaad, and the Dragon. The musical has a similar plot to the movie but includes some differences. The musical includes fairytale creatures such as Pinocchio, Gingy, Sugar Plum Fairy, Shoemaker’s Elf, and Grumpy. The plot of Shrek the Musical is Shrek going on an unexpected adventure. His swamp becomes overrun by Lord Farquaad’s banned fairytale creatures. Shrek goes to Lord Farquaad to demand his swamp back. He sends him on a quest to rescue Princess Fiona from a tower surrounded by lava and a dragon in exchange for the deed to his swamp. Shrek rescues the princess, and they begin to fall in love. However, the princess goes with Lord Farquaad and Shrek has to crash their wedding to confess his love. In the end, Lord Farquaad is destroyed, the fairytale creatures are released, and Shrek and Princess Fiona live happily ever after.
I would rate this play a five out of 10. I would have never chosen to watch it if not for my class.
