The St. Marys High School golfers travelled to the WV High School State Tournament on Monday, Oct. 2. Contested at Oglebay Resort’s Jones Course, they hoped for a good result.
Despite their preparations, the Blue Devils struggled to a fourth-place finish after the first day of competition. They collectively had some of their worst rounds all year and were in a difficult position to come back and win a state title. Preston Lawhon shot a good round of 81, Trent Renner, Cole Darnold, and Kenzie Armstrong struggled to rounds of 90, 96 and 99 respectively.
The Blue Devil golfers come to the Jones Course on the morning of Wednesday, Oct.
5, with high hopes and anticipation of recovering their deficit. They were looking forward to the chance to win a state title after finishing in second the previous year.
The second day was not what the Blue Devils had envisioned. With a strong surge from the Wheeling Central Maroon Knights, and solid golf from the Summers County Bobcats and the Wahama White Falcons, the Blue Devils were unable to recover their deficit and finished in fourth place. Day two scores include: Preston Lawhon and Cole Darnold with a pair of 85’s, Kenzie Armstrong with a 90, and Trent Renner with a 90.
The Maroon Knights played well both days on their home course, beating the Blue Devils by a large margin for the first time all season. The Blue Devils did not finish the season how they wanted, but they will be working hard to come back and taker the title next year.
