Blue Devil Band Wins State Championship
The SMHS Blue Devil Marching band won the state championships for marching bands.
They were awarded the title at the annual WVMBI and West Virginia Governor’s Cup Marching Band series sponsored by the West Virginia Department of Arts, Culture and History. The series consisted of 12 local marching band competitions across that state along with WVMBI championships. Bands collected points by competing in at least four of the local competitions. In 2017 the state legislature designated this event to be the state championship for marching band.
The band was the Class D champions at the Parkersburg South Invitational on Oct. 8, Class D champions at the Horseshoe Classic in Philip Barbour on Oct. 22, and finally the Class D State Champions in Charlston at Laidley Field on Oct. 29.
