St. Marys Girls Hold Off Ravenswood
Playing 48 hours after surviving an overtime Slugfest against Magnolia, St. Marys was sluggish but had enough left in the tank for a 76-72 Little Kanawha Conference girls’ Basketball Victory over Ravenswood Wednesday.
The fifth-ranked (Class AA) Lady Blue Devils could not shake the fired up Red Devilettes and needed a late surge to seal the deal on the four-point win.
Both teams shot the ball well on the night as both hit at a 63 percent clip from the floor. St. Marys improved to 6-1 with road trips to Wirt County (Friday) and Valley-Wetzel (Saturday) on the immediate horizon. The Lady Devils fell behind early but rallied to outscore Ravenswood 21-15 in the second quarter to build a 38-33 lead at halftime.
The Red Devilettes fought back in the third quarter to move in front by two points, 52-50. The hosts continued to lead until St. Marys closed the game on a strong run to salvage the four-point win.
St. Marys finally regained the lead with just over three minutes to play when Josey Moore swished a baseline and then nailed two free throws to put the lady devils on top 64-62.
Zoe Davis’ three-point play and two Alexis Hashman charity tosses extended the margin to 69-63 with 2:13 remaining. Ravenswood wasn’t finished. The Red Devilettes pulled to within three points in the final minute before free throws by Moore and senior co-captain Lara Fetty and a run-out layout by Davis in the final seconds allowed St. Marys to seal the deal on the hard-fought win.
Ravenswood fell to 2-5 on the season but has played one of the most challenging;;ending early season schedules in class AA.
