“Miss Americana” is a Netflix Original documentary film that was released on Jan. 23 of this year. The documentary follows famous singer and songwriter Taylor Swift, and lets the viewers get a more intimate look into her life and her career.

I have never been the biggest fan of Taylor Swift, I must admit. I have liked many of her songs over the years, but had never followed too closely to her life. However, after watching this film, I have much more respect and love for Taylor and her music.

In the film, the good and bad moments of Taylor’s life and career are showcased. Some drama mentioned in the film includes Kayne West stealing the microphone from her on stage and also calling her a derogatory name in one of his songs, her sexual harassment trial and also her opinion on polotics. After getting to see more into these events in her life, and her emotions and feeling behind them, I feel much more connected to her and her influence on society. The fact that Taylor helped so much with young voter turnout in her home state of Tennessee, is just purely amazing.

The film also featured many clips of her working in the studio to write and record music, and also the brainstorming and making of her music videos. I love to be able to get a behind the scenes look of people creating and recording their music, and coming up with the ideas for their videos and even live performances. I especially liked seeing Taylor do this because the clips of Taylor are so raw, and they show the whole process of trying to find the right words and melody. This film doesn’t just show the perfect notes and words, but also shows Taylor repeatedly singing songs again to tweak it and make it better.

Overall, I absolutely loved this documentary. As I said before, after watching this I feel like I have found a much bigger appreciation and level of respect for Taylor Swift, as a person and an artist. Taylor talking about how the music industry basically throws you and your career away after you hit the age of 30 if you’re a female, and how she’s determined to stay on top and be successful no matter her age or gender, is a really inspiring message. I would recommend this film to anyone who loves Taylor and her music, or documentaries about music and the processes behind it.
